Lieutenant McKelvie

Heat defenceman Zach McKelvie has taken a different route to the AHL than his contemporaries in Abbotsford. The Minnesota native played for four seasons with Army at West Point (US Military Academy), captaining the squad in 2008-09. McKelvie took a two year hiatus from hockey following his tenure at West Point, serving on active duty with the U.S. Army before he began his professional career with the Bruins organization. During 2009-10 and 2010-11, McKelvie was training recruits as a Lieutenant in Fort Benning, Georgia. McKelvie is a proud graduate of West Point, and remains on the U.S. Army Individual Ready Reserve.

Top Round Talent

The Heat lineup has five first-round picks, spanning from 1999-2011:

  • Sven Baertschi, 13th overall in 2011 (Calgary Flames)
  • Greg Nemisz, 25th overall in 2008 (Calgary Flames)
  • Leland Irving, 26th overall in 2006 (Calgary Flames)
  • Krys Kolanos, 19th overall in 2000 (Phoenix Coyotes)
  • Steve McCarthy, 23rd overall in 1999 (Chicago Blackhawks)
