The Heat love getting involved in the community, and on March 6, they did just that by playing floor hockey with members of Special Olympics British Columbia. Max Reinhart, Brady Lamb and Brett Olson were joined by Hawkey, and OJ from the front office to play in the mini-tournament at the Ag-Rec building in Abbotsford. The local team was joined by squads from Coquitlam, Mission and two from Langley in the round-robin style tourney with the action lasting just over an hour.

This was the final event of the season for Special Olympics BC floor hockey, who had been playing and practicing every Wednesday since October. The age of the players goes from 17 all the way to one veteran who is 68 years old. Reinhart had a lot of praise for the teams, particularly his older line-mate noticing how he “toe dragged and shot far side, so we have a lot of talent [on the floor] for sure!” Brady Lamb echoed his thoughts, saying “The game has a really quick pace and a lot of good passing. It’s a lot of fun.” When we asked Hawkey for a comment, he just smiled and passed the puck to a forward swinging in with speed who put the puck in the back of the net.

When play finished, all the teams got together to celebrate a great season with some pizza from Ricardo’s and a chance to get some autographs and hang out with the Heat players. Everybody who participated had an awesome time, and the Heat guys can’t wait to get in on the action again!
